About

Jamie Donnelly is the guitar, bass, and music production teacher behind Up The Music Services in Middlesbrough. Alongside guitar, he teaches bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, and music theory, in person locally or online, and offers recording, mixing, and mastering for students who want to take a song from first take to finished track.

Lessons are built around what each student actually wants to play, not a fixed curriculum, whether that’s a total beginner picking up their first chord or someone returning to guitar after years away. Jamie is known for meeting students where they are: patient with late starters, adaptable for learners with different needs or paces, and genuinely invested in getting a song finished, not just a technique checked off.

Sit back. This is probably going to be a long one and I have no idea where it’s going. In short. I’m a 40 odd year beginner. I have mobility issues that for the last couple of years Jamie has been helping with. A year ago. Just as I was getting half decent. I broke a wrist and had to stop until March this year and pretty much learn again from the start. I don’t think my lessons with Jamie are typical. I don’t think I’ll achieve a grading. But. Bit by bit. I’m getting better and more important. Gaining confidence in myself. In April. I wrote my first song in 40 years. The past 3 months lessons. Jamie has dedicated to helping me arrange and play all the various parts. And we are now we are at the stage where it can be recorded. I converted my Bass to the same tuning as my baritone and recorded it last night at my lesson learning about modern production now as part of my scope. In short. Jamie is an outstanding tutor. He deals with my AuDHD thought direction changes as quickly as I can make them. When I’ve felt in pain or down he’s adapted. I’ve never had a non productive lesson. And now I’m recording a song I wrote myself. If like me, you’re a perpetual beginner, if you have mobility issues, if you’re neuro spicy, or if you or one of your kids has a guitar you have no idea how to play ... don’t just find a random tutor online. Get in touch with Jamie while he has a few spaces. These lessons are beyond guitar tuition for me. They're musical history discussion, physical and mental health therapy, they are song creation lessons, music theory lessons in which week by week I’m becoming better at playing a range of guitars and my bass. I’ve not yet had my best lesson. I leave each week saying it was my best lesson. I looking forward to my best lesson in another few lessons time when I have an angry punk song fully recorded ... yes. I’m that old. Now get off my lawn.
