Marty began playing guitar in the sixth grade in the early 1970's. His musical journey continued through various garage bands and formal music training, including a year at Berklee College of Music. This foundational experience led him to a career in music education, dedicated to sharing his passion and knowledge. He enjoys working with students of all ages and specializes in developing their skills through personalized instruction. What makes him unique is his blend of professional training and decades of practical experience, aiming to make learning enjoyable and rewarding.

Martin, known as Songsmith Marty, is a guitar teacher with over 40 years of experience, teaching privately from his home in Whitefield, Manchester, and online. He focuses on getting students playing quickly and offers instruction in various styles including blues, rock, and country, particularly welcoming complete beginners. He also provides songwriting lessons, helping students overcome writer’s block and create effective song structures and hooks. He emphasizes his role as a ‘teacher who plays, not a player who teaches’.
