The 7 Most Common Beginner Mistakes on Guitar

Many people start off learning to play the guitar with a lot of bad ideas already in place. In this short lesson, Colin Daniel will address 7 of the most common mistakes that beginners make on the guitar.

Keep in mind that his list is drawn up from the experience of having taught over 5000 students one on one over the past 40 years... if there's a common mistake that beginners make, Colin has definitely encountered it!

The list might surprise you though, because they have more to do about mindset and your overall approach to the guitar, rather than things like "using your second finger instead of your first finger on a ___ chord" or specifics of that nature.

So, with that said, take a few minutes, watch Colin's lesson, and then examine your own playing habits to see if you're making any of the common beginner mistakes that he mentions.

Hey Colin, thanks. I'm an older beginner, and those fundamentals make a big difference, good habits make you less tired and less frustrated.

Excellent advice. I'd never heard of the ills of pressing down too hard. Now, about that 1 hour a day of practice - that's what I really need to work on. Thanks very much.

Hi Michael, are you just starting on the guitar, or have you been playing for a while? If you're just starting out, I'd recommend Colin's Beginner course as an excellent foundation...

Well, his Guitar Improvising Secrets would help in that direction, though it is not a complete, from scratch, learning how to solo course either. I'd also recommend my Guitar Scale Patterns course...

Hey thanks so much for all of the pointers.I'm just starting out with an acoustic guitar and TRYING to teach myself. My family and I are great participants in the arts I play flute and sing in choir,my oldest sister plays saxophone, clarinet, piano, writes stories and is going to college to be a major in music,my mom plays the piano and sings, and finally last but not least one of my other sisters sings in the school choir. I just wanted to say music has always been a part of my life thanks for being a great teacher even though I've never met you.
